The Scene of the Crime
Lynda La Plante

The Author

Lynda La Plante CBE is the author of over fifty bestselling novels. She trained for the stage at RADA and worked with the National Theatre and RSC before becoming a television actress. She then turned to writing – and made her breakthrough with the phenomenally successful TV series Widows.  Prime Suspect – which ran for 7 seasons starring Helen Mirren- won her many awards from BAFTA, Emmys and more. As a crime novelist she has sold over 5 million books in the UK alone.

The Book

Meet Jessica Russell, an experienced CSI officer who is tasked with pulling together MSCAN, an unprecedented team of qualified scientists who assess crime scenes and uncover unseen clues.

When the husband of a notorious barrister is savagely attacked during a robbery and left comatose, the fledgling unit is given the case.  They must unravel the intricate mystery behind this brutal crime.  Was it a robbery gone wrong or is something far more significant at play? With pressure mounting for results, a single mistake could cost the team everything.

Praise for Lynda La Plante

Awarded a CBE for her services to Literature, Drama and Charity in 2008, thisyear, she  was awarded the Diamond Dagger, the highest accolade in crime writing recognising authors whose crime writing careers have been marked by sustained excellence, and who have made a significant contribution to the genre.

Black Butterflies
Priscilla Morris

The Author

Priscilla Morris is the daughter of a Bosnian mother and a Cornish father. She grew up in London, spending summers in Sarajevo, and studied at Cambridge University and the University of East Anglia, where she gained her PhD in Creative Writing. She teaches Creative Writing at University College Dublin and divides her time between Ireland and Spain. Black Butterflies is her debut novel.

The Book

Sarajevo, spring 1992. Each night, nationalist gangs erect barricades, splitting the diverse city into ethnic enclaves; each morning, the residents – whether Muslim, Croat or Serb – push the makeshift barriers aside.

When violence finally spills over, Zora, an artist and teacher, sends her husband and elderly mother to safety with her daughter in England. Reluctant to believe that hostilities will last more than a handful of weeks, she stays behind while the city falls under siege. As the assault deepens and everything they love is laid to waste, black ashes floating over the rooftops, Zora and her friends are forced to rebuild themselves, over and over. Theirs is a breathtaking story of disintegration, resilience and hope.

Praise for Black Butterflies

Feels totally authentic… Along with human kindness, there is a quiet emphasis on the power of art: Zora’s paintings, like the existence of this book, are testimony to the way that wars come and go but art goes on foreverThe Sunday Times

‘A lyrical, devastating and timely love letter to war-torn Sarajevo.’ Rachel Joyce, Guardian
